Our Brand New Home

Despite all my years I still feel like a child within. I have a difficult time peering into the mirror and locating a fully realized mature man. You would have thought the delivery of my 2nd child might have changed it, but I still seem to be in denial of the aging process.

And regarding aging — or rather fighting it off — my wife and I recently moved into a brand new house and it features space in the basement for a exercise room my dear wfe had always wanted. But I’m seeing dollar signs when I consider the many diverse items necessary, from the required but oft-neglected benches for weight-lifting and excercise mat to determining the most versatile of the many exercise bikes.

An exercise bike can be tricky these days. Do I go with a recumbent or an upright stationary bike? Should you choose an electronic or analog?

Of course, my wife appears determined to get one of those elliptical trainers too. Yes you read that accurately. A stationary bicycle and an elliptical trainer — not only one or the other. My guess is that the extra exercise equipment goes with the stretch mark treatment she began using after she bore our youngest child. I’m sure I’ll regret that joke.

I have to be particular with the budget because our new house is a bit more of a diamond in the rough. We wanted it this way, but we still have to cautiously budget every little thing, down to the cabinet knobs (no kidding). My dear wife has an ambitious kitchen cabinet refacing project planned, but I have to remind her the sinks for the bathrooms she wants installed will set us back a pretty penny, as well.

Gratefully, we both like the rustic, organic look, so we are furnishing our new home with unfinished furnitures. It still needs a little finishing, but she and I can keep our costs down and create better furniture than we could buy anywhere anyways.

I recently found a good pair of coffee tables with some decent, natural knotting and a entryway table in matching cedar. For our patio we are researching outdoor fireplaces and we will furnish with some budget wicker furnitures initially.

Providing for a brand new house seem so adult, but I can’t help but sense I’m just playing house. The new exercise equipment and furniture merely feel like a new generation of toys.
