AED 101

An AED is a small , easily transportable machine that assesses a person’s heart rhythm for any irregularities and, if sensible, advises the rescuer to deliver an electrical shock to the heart of an sudden cardiac arrest victim .  This shock , entitled defibrillation, may allow the heart to return to a normal rhythm .

An AED employs   voice prompts to instruct   the trained help. As soon as the equipment is turned on , the rescuer will be directed to place the 2 pads that come with the AED to the SCA vistim’s chest. As soon as they are in position, the Automated External Defibrillator will begin to monitor the SCA victim’s heart rhythm.  If a “shockable” rhythm is recognized, the machine will charge itself and instruct the rescuer to stand clear of the victim and to press the shock button.

An AED is hard wired to teach rescuers precisely what to do , using   voice and visual cues . trained help put  sticky electrode pads on the person’s chest. Through these electrodes, the Automated External Defibrillator is built to automatically evaluate the electrical activity of the heart to determine if a “shockable” rhythm is present .

Whether you expeience an SCA at home  or in the Emergency Room of a hospital, defibrillation is THE definitive treatment .

AED laws change from state to state.  Check to see what your state laws require.
